Scope and content The bulk of the collection relates to Loula White Fleming's club-related activities, especially her work with the United Daughters of the Confederacy (1921-1957). Materials include programs; instructional handbooks on the Civil War and Confederate Flags; clippings; photographs of the Bentonville Memorial; and correspondence dealing with the War Relief Committee, Soldier's Home Committee, and Stone Mountain Memorial in Georgia. Also included is Fleming's genealogy information for admission into the U.D.C., Colonial Dames, and Daughters of the American Revolution. Federal Art Council Gallery materials include correspondence; publications by the General Federation of Women's Clubs, Works Progress Administration, and East Carolina Art Society; documents concerning art exhibits and galleries; and items documenting the finances and programs of the Art Society and Community Art Center. Greenville Women's Club materials concern the club's accomplishments, finances, dues, programs, meetings, and constitution. End of the Century Book Club materials include the group's constitution and bylaws, programs, and a presidential address to the club. Other clubs represented in the collection include the Order of the Eastern Star; Wednesday Club of Richmond, Va.; East Carolina Faculty Wives Club; and Greenville Music Club. Material concerning Memorial Baptist Church reflects Fleming's life-long affiliation with that institution and includes bulletins, histories of the church, and material from the Women's Missionary Union. Materials belonging to Fleming's daughter Louise include correspondence from Louise's brother James and Robert Lee Humber while in Europe; a report card; and genealogical files on the White, Grady, and Whitfield Families.

Biographical noteLoula Victoria White Fleming (1878-1967), daughter of Captain Charles Alexander White and Louisa Amanda Cory of Greenville, N.C., married James Lawson Fleming, a Greenville lawyer and member of the state legislature, in 1899. The Flemings had 3 children: Louise Elizabeth, Margaret, and James Lawson, Jr. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, United Daughters of the Confederacy, Eastern Star, End of the Century Book Club, Greenville Women's Club, Greenville Music Club, and East Carolina Art Society.
